Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a strength with the right support — help is here.

Overview

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting both children and adults. It is characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with functioning and development. ADHD is not a result of laziness or lack of intelligence — it is a neurological difference that affects executive functioning. With the right treatment, individuals with ADHD can thrive in school, work, and relationships.

Causes & Risk Factors

ADHD has a strong genetic component — it runs in families in approximately 75% of cases. Differences in brain development, particularly in areas controlling attention and executive function, play a central role. Environmental factors such as premature birth, low birth weight, prenatal exposure to tobacco or alcohol, and early childhood trauma may also contribute.

Who It Affects

ADHD affects approximately 8.4% of children and 2.5% of adults in the U.S. It is more commonly diagnosed in boys during childhood, but girls are often underdiagnosed due to presenting with predominantly inattentive symptoms. Many adults are diagnosed later in life when symptoms become more impairing.

Signs & Symptoms

Inattention

Difficulty sustaining focus, frequent careless mistakes, losing things, and being easily distracted.

Excessive fidgeting, inability to stay seated, running or climbing in inappropriate situations.

Impulsivity

Acting without thinking, interrupting others, difficulty waiting for one's turn.

Disorganization

Struggling to plan, prioritize, and complete tasks in an organized manner.

Emotional Dysregulation

Low frustration tolerance, quick temper, and mood swings.

Forgetfulness

Frequently forgetting daily tasks, appointments, and obligations.
