Bipolar Disorder

Stability and balance are achievable with the right care and support.

Overview

Bipolar Disorder is a brain disorder that causes dramatic shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to think clearly. These mood episodes range from periods of extremely elevated or irritable moods (mania or hypomania) to periods of deep depression. There are several types, including Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Cyclothymic Disorder. Bipolar Disorder is a lifelong condition, but with proper treatment, people can lead full, productive lives.

Causes & Risk Factors

The exact cause is not fully understood, but research points to a combination of genetic predisposition, brain structure differences, and environmental triggers such as high stress, sleep disruption, or substance use. A family history of bipolar disorder significantly increases risk.

Who It Affects

Bipolar Disorder affects approximately 5.7 million American adults. It occurs equally in men and women, and typically first appears in the late teen or early adult years, though it can emerge at any age.

Signs & Symptoms

Manic Episodes

Unusually elevated or irritable mood, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, and impulsive behavior.

Depressive Episodes

Deep sadness, fatigue, loss of interest, hopelessness, and difficulty concentrating.

Hypomanic Episodes

A less severe form of mania that does not cause significant impairment but may be noticeable to others.

Mixed States

Simultaneous symptoms of mania and depression — feeling agitated, restless, or sad with high energy.

Rapid Cycling

Four or more mood episodes within a 12-month period.

Impaired Judgment

Making risky financial, sexual, or social decisions during manic phases.
