Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Neurodiversity-affirming care that celebrates strengths and supports growth.
Overview
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of behavior or interests. ASD is a spectrum — meaning it presents very differently from person to person. Some individuals are highly independent, while others require significant daily support. At NTX Psychiatry, we view autism through a neurodiversity-affirming lens: ASD is a different way of experiencing the world, not a deficit to be fixed.
Causes & Risk Factors
ASD has a strong genetic basis, with heritability estimates of 64–91%. Environmental factors during prenatal development — such as advanced parental age, prenatal infections, or certain medications — may also play a role. ASD is not caused by vaccines. Brain connectivity differences, particularly in social and sensory processing networks, are consistently observed in research.
Who It Affects
ASD affects approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States, according to the CDC. It is 4 times more common in boys than girls, though girls are often underdiagnosed due to better social masking. ASD is a lifelong condition, though many individuals develop effective coping strategies and live independently.

Our Approach at NTX Psychiatry
NTX Psychiatry provides psychiatric support for individuals with ASD, with a focus on co-occurring mental health conditions — anxiety, depression, ADHD, and sleep disorders are very common in autistic individuals. We do not attempt to change autistic traits, but rather support the person in managing distress, building on strengths, and improving quality of life. Medication is used thoughtfully and only when symptoms significantly impact functioning.
